Detecting Danger in the Classroom: K-12 Smart Sensors
With school safety and security being a major concern in all schools, the ability to maximize accuracy and detection for potential dangerous situations with oftentimes limited manpower is crucial. As such, the implementation of smart sensor technologies in the school setting can relieve much of this burden from the shoulders of staff members, allowing them to focus more on classroom instruction rather than security concerns.
Vape Detection
While the use of fire alarms and smoke detectors in schools is commonplace, the ability to detect vape smoke has become a challenge as vaping has risen in popularity among students. New technology, such as the Halo Smart Sensor and the Habitec Smart Sensor can detect substances used in vaping including nicotine and THC that regular smoke detectors cannot detect. These detectors are now being installed in bathrooms and other common vaping areas within school buildings and are successfully alerting school administrators to any substance use occurrences in record time.
School Shooting Detection
With the abundance of school shootings making headlines, gun detection and shooting prevention have become major areas of concern when it comes to school safety. However, thanks to smart sensor technology, the likelihood of these potentially life-threatening incidents can be greatly reduced. AI sensors, such as Zeroeyes AI Cloud, are now able to track specific objects from security footage similar to how faces and other descriptive features can be identified. Other technologies, such as Guardian Indoor Active Shooter Detection System, include sensors that respond to gunfire and immediately alert school personnel, students and emergency responders.
Access Control
An important way to mitigate security breaches on the school campus involves a robust access control system. With student and staff IDs required for many school districts, utilizing technology solutions that can be paired with existing identification tools provides a less complex option. Installing ID scanners to monitor who is all in the building at any given time can help schools identify not only potential intruders but also better track student attendance and movement patterns throughout the building to better monitor student activity. In addition to smart badges for faculty and staff, providing guests with temporary smart IDs helps maintain security even with visitors in the building. Software solutions can be paired with this ID tracking technology to conduct quick background checks on potential visitors by cross referencing sex offender databases, for example, that can help prevent dangerous situations before they even occur.
