Updated CDC Mask Guidelines

On February 25, the CDC released new mask recommendations for indoor spaces, relying now on community risk level rather than transmission rates for guidance. According to the new system, each U.S. county is assigned a risk level–high, medium, or low–depending on each county’s individual healthcare data, including COVID-related hospital admissions, bed usage and new cases. While the CDC has changed their mask guidelines, those who feel more comfortable wearing a mask are encouraged to continue to do so, particularly if in a high risk county. Those interested in knowing their county’s risk for COVID-19 can visit the CDC COVID-19 County Check webpage for updated information.

COVID-19 Community Levels

  • Low: Counties in low community levels are advised to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations and to get tested if any symptoms are present.

  • Medium: Counties in medium community levels are also encouraged to stay up to date with all COVID-19 vaccinations and to get tested if any symptoms appear. Those at high risk for severe illness are also encouraged to wear a mask at the discretion of their healthcare provider and continue taking other precautions as needed.

  • High: Counties in high risk areas are advised to continue wearing masks indoors. Like the other risk levels, they are encouraged to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations and to get tested if any symptoms appear. Those at high risk for severe illness may need to take additional precautions in addition to masking as advised by their healthcare provider.
